Visit Montana

The Bitterroot Valley is known as the "Banana Belt" of Montana. Microclimates can be found throughout the Valley because of the variety of elevations and bodies of water. Average rainfall is 12-15 inches per year. Snow comes early in the mountains and varies greatly from year to year on the Valley floor. Annual snowfall (at Lost Trail Ski Area) 200+ inches. Annual Snowfall (at Valley Floor) 6 inches. Annual Sunny Days - 270. Average temperatures: April (high 61 degrees) August (high 80 degrees). Annual Growing Days - 120; Daylight Hours (June 21 - 16.5) The Bitterroot Valley is nestled between two mountain ranges on the western edge of the state. We offer uncommonly beautiful scenery and a wide range of activities for everyone of all ages.

Hiking, Horseback Riding, Mountain Biking and Llama Treks:
Trails will lead you on short hikes through pristine portions of the Bitterroot National Forest. Roads will take you off the beaten path to beautiful lakes and waterfalls or through the heart of the wilderness areas. 


Parks and Golf Courses:
One 18-hole golf course in Hamilton; one 9-hole golf course in Stevensville bordering Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge. A variety of parks in the Bitterroot Valley's cities and on State and Federal lands. 


Winter Sports:
Lost Trail Powder Mountain usually accumulates the greatest snow depth in Montana making it one of the best downhill slopes in the state. Our cross-country skiing is one of the best in Montana along with miles and miles of nordic and snowmobile trails. 


Natural Hot Springs:
Soak in natural hot springs after a day of winter activities, enjoyable throughout the year. 


Fishing:
Right here on the Bitterroot River is some of the best trout fishing in the country. Fishermen have access to streams, rivers and mountain lakes as well. 


Hunting:
At the Bitterroot Valley's back door is a hunter's paradise. Big game species include elk, bear, white tail and mule deer, mountain lion and moose. Birds include pheasant, grouse, duck and geese. 


Watchable Wildlife:
Wildlife photographers, birdwatchers and hunters are attracted to the area by the variety and abundance of our wildlife species. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, Teller Wildlife Refuge, Broad Axe and Skalkaho Game Preserve are wonderful destinations for wildlife viewing. 


Shopping:
A variety of retail and department stores along with gift shops keep the most dedicated shopper happy. The Bitterroot Valley hosts numerous Antique and Art Shops as well. 


Historical:
With Stevensville being the first settlement in Montana, there are numerous sites of historical significance. Visit St. Mary's Mission, Fort Owen, the Daly Mansion and several museums.
